Cabernet Franc reaches its pinnacle of expression in the Loire Valley, where it "headlines" as the region's leading red grape.
The Cave de Saumur Cooperative, one of the finest of its type in France, knocked it out of the park with their 2021 Les Pouches Rouge. 100% Cab Franc from the limestone-rich soils of Saumur, this dazzles the palate with fresh and silky notes of damson plum, dark cherry, violet, pepper, and damp earth.
It's an incredible value, and it's built for the holiday dinner table! Get some, you won't regret it.

The Cave de Saumur Cooperative has been in operation for most of my wine career, and I've always respected their work. Their latest releases have really grabbed my attention, and their Les Pouches Rouge is a staff favorite. Maybe it's vintage conditions, maybe it's luck, maybe it's just that they do things right. I think it's a combination of all of those factors.
Loire Cab Franc at this price point rarely offers up more than fruity and simple red wines. Les Pouches, on the other hand, is a soulful and satisfying rendition that easily competes with wines that cost 2-3 times the price.
While Cabernet Franc is often thought of as a "blending grape" in Bordeaux and Napa, it does just fine by itself in France's Loire Valley. Growers in the region realized many years back that the grape was a wonderful conduit for terroir, and you can taste those chalky soils in every sip of this wine. Not to worry though, there's beautiful fruit and floral expression here too.
This is a wine with a 100% approval rating from Team Table Wine, and it's that ideal, mid-weighted red that pairs perfectly with the holiday meal. With its smooth tannins and juicy acidity, it also makes for a great glass of wine to sip while you're watching football or Christmas movies too :)
