Josh here, and I've got to say I mis-called this wine when I referred to it as the “softer and plusher side of Sangiovese.” The more I’ve had it, and I’ve had 3 bottles in the past 2 weeks, the more I think it drinks like a powerful, structured Brunello or at least a really good Rosso di Montalcino.
Gabriele Buondonno runs this emerging estate in the southwestern corner of Tuscany, and he works with old, organic Sangiovese. Vintage 2021 was a great one throughout Central Italy, and the power of the year is fully on display here. Like a young Brunello, this has got the tannin and acidity that makes it perfect for serving alongside grilled meats, hearty pasta dishes, or charcuterie.
Like almost all great Italian reds, this one is made for the table and/or the cellar. Drink now through 2030, and be sure to decant for a good hour or so.
2021 Buondonno Rosso Toscana: Here's why you should buy it:
- It's quite a "serious" wine, with some of the structure found in a Brunello! This acid and tannin is balanced by ripe and decadent fruit -- look for notes of dark plum, sweet black cherry, sage, violet, leather and amaro-like nuances.
- The 2021 vintage was a very good one in Tuscany. Hot, dry, and sunny, these optimal growing conditions endowed this wine with its powerful personality.
- Located in Castellina in Chianti, home to Tuscan titans such as Castellare, Fonterutoli, and Rocca delle Macie, Buondonno is the estate that all of the "cool kids" are talking about.
- Brand new to the US, their wines are slowly being discovered and loved. Our advice, buy now before the prices go up. We guarantee you they will!
