The Bohigas Rosat Cava is one of the best sparkling rose deals in the world. Bone dry yet round and loaded with ripe red fruits, it makes for a refreshing aperitif.
Eric Asimov of the New York Times recently picked the Bohigas Rosat as one of the top under-$20 wines for “Stay-at-Home Drinking.” I’ll drink to that!

Do not be scared away by this wine’s deeper color — I know that can often indicate sweeter and softer wines. That is not the case here! Bottled with just 6 grams/liter of sugar at dosage, this is well under the 12 grams/liter that the Brut designation allows. And it’s definitely a ‘winey’ style of sparkling rose, offering up bold notes of ripe cherry, blood orange and rose petal.
I already wrote at length about the Bohigas family and their dedication to organic farming HERE, so I’m not going to repeat myself. What I will tell you is this “rosat, the Catalonian form of rosado, which itself is the Castilian word for rosé, is made from Trepat, an indigenous Catalonian grape, with a touch of Pinot Noir.” – Eric Asimov – New York Times
So what the heck is Trepat? It’s a little know indigenous grape only found in the vineyards of Catalunya, near Barcelona. It’s used primarily to make pink Cava and it possesses some lovely traits. Most notably, Trepat is wonderfully fragrant with notes of rose petal and honeysuckle. It’s also naturally high in acidity which makes it a great grape for sparkling wine where freshness and acidity are key. The only reason more people don’t try sparkling Trepat is because it’s got a lot of color. And folks tend to think it’s going to be sweet.
Trust me, IT’S NOT SWEET! But it is delicious and it’s wonderful with or without food. Sashimi tuna on the menu? This would pair wonderfully. Big salad with mixed veggies and goat cheese or feta about to get into your belly? Get a bottle of this.
