Sorry to share some bad news first. If you think Santa Margherita is the best Pinot Grigio in the world. you’ve lost your mind. That stuff is sold in gas stations throughout Italy for 3 to 4 euros per bottle. It ain’t special folks. However, here’s a wine that is! Punggl is the crown jewel vineyard in the Nals Margreid Pinot Grigio vineyards — if it were in France, it would be declared Grand Cru. Composed of 80+ year old vines that get blasted with sunshine during the growing season, this is a white that packs a punch.
“Complex aromas of peach and tropical fruit complemented by sweet spices and wet minerals. Rich, dense and juicy, with spicy orchard fruit flavors and a long creamy finish,” says Ian D’Agata of Vinous Media. Yep! “Full body, layered and exotic. Rich and flavorful yet always vivid and fresh. Big and rich.” So says James Suckling — he’s right too. This old-vine, hillside Pinot Grigio is a perfect winter white and it’s seriously world-class white wine for less than $20.
One of the keys to fully enjoying this wine is to NOT serve it too cold! As with many world class white wines, to get the full impression of the wine, it needs to be served just below room temperature. Trust me on this one folks, it’s one of the best white wines your money can buy in the store.
