La Garrigue Cuvee Romaine 2020

Back Up The Truck: 2020 Domaine La Garrigue Cotes du Rhone 'Cuvee Romaine'

WOW! That was all I could say after smelling and tasting La Garrigue's 2020 Cuvee Romaine last week. A wine that always over-delivers in a big way, the newest release is truly sublime.

Let's get one thing straight -- this is not like most Cotes du Rhones. La Garrigue's Cotes du Rhone is a much more serious and powerful wine, as all of the grapes come from 40-60 year old vines located in and around Vacqueyras. The combination of site and age of vines combine to create a  far more complex and age-worthy Cotes du Rhone.

I remember the first time I had this wine. It was the 2007 vintage, a fabulous year in the Southern Rhone, and I just remember being floored by the quality-to-price ratio. This was honestly the first wine I ever bought a solid case of, and I think the 2020 vintage is in the same league as the 2007. I drank my last of those '07's in 2016, and the wine held up remarkably well. It was a special "wine moment."

Yes, I will be buying a solid case of the 2020 to drink now and down the road, and I recommend you do the sameDrinking much more like a rugged and powerful Vacqueyras than a bistro-styled Cotes du Rhone, this comes from one of the oldest and most respected estates in the Southern Rhone -- click here to get La Garrigue's full bio. Back to the wine! This is one that will offer immediate pleasure for sure, but it will peak in 5 years and offer great drinking through 2030.

Jeb Dunnuck summed it up nicely. "The 2020 Côtes Du Rhône Cuvée Romaine checks in as 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. It has a beautiful bouquet of red and black fruits, garrigue, pepper, and spice to go with a medium to full-bodied, rich, beautifully textured style on the palate. With a level of purity and complexity well above its humble price point, it's a no brainer purchase." I promise you I'm not being lazy when I say he stole the words right out of my mouth.

I'm offering an aggressive solid case and solid 6-pack price. I want you to be able to enjoy some now with hearty fall fare, but I also want you to lay some down. When you pop a bottle tonight, you'll be very happy, but when you get into a bottle 5 years from now, you'll be wishing you bought more.
