2021 Domaine Les Aphillanthes Cotes du Rhone Tradition -- Here's why you should buy it:
- Husband and wife Daniel and Helene Boulle are quality fanatics. Even for this, their entry-level Cotes du Rhone, they include 40-50+ year-old vines into the mix.
- The estate is blessed with some prime terroir. Much like Chateauneuf du Pape, their vineyards are covered by the classic galets (rounded stones) of the region. This rugged terrain stresses the vines and leads to deeply flavored, highly expressive wines.
- It's a fresher and more elegant style of Cotes du Rhone. This is no doubt due to the higher proportion of Carignan (30%), a grape that maintains acidity even in the warmest of climates. Don't worry though, this still has plenty of meat on the bone :)
- Offering up a nice mix of warm raspberry, cherry, white pepper, violet, and rose petal notes on a medium- to full-bodied frame with supple and generous tannins, this is as charming as CDR gets.
