The 2020 Poderi Dal Nespoli Famoso is one of my favorite, value-priced whites in the store. Why? Because it combines the aromatic delightfulness of a Gewurztraminer or Viognier with the fresh tanginess of a Sauvignon Blanc. Even better, you can't beat the price on this one.

If you’re looking for a crowd-pleasing white wine, look no further. The fine folks at Poderi dal Nespoli, one of the finest estates in Emilia-Romagna in Northern Italy, saved the Famoso grape from going extinct about 20 years ago. I’m glad they did because this stuff is downright stunning, especially for the price.
The Famoso grape is incredibly rare and you won’t find it outside of this region. Also known as Uva Rambela, the grape had been “abandoned” for many years before Nespoli rediscovered it and put it back into circulation. It is definitely considered an aromatic grape variety and when you stick your nose in the glass, you’ll immediately take notice of that fact.
Fermented and aged in stainless steel, this one is laced with lovely scents of honeysuckle, jasmine, peach, honeyed citrus, and apricot. The palate is equally fine, and although it smells like Viognier and Gewurztraminer, it's not as heavy. Furthermore, even though it's nice, crisp, and dry, it's not quite as high-toned as Sauvignon Blanc.
This is one of those wines that really sings when paired with spicy Thai or Indian dishes. It’s equally at home with fish and seafood dishes, but it’s also great by itself. My advice — don’t buy just 1 bottle. You’re gonna’ love it. Cheers and keep drinking the good stuff in the AVL!
