The Recoltant story is a great one. Made by Julien Fayard, who used to be Philippe Melka's right-hand-man, it was originally made to cover by-the-glass placements at two of Napa Valley's most renowned restaurants. It was so well-received that they decided to make a bit more, and that is why we've got some to sell to you all!
This is serious juice, and the fruit sources are impeccable. I'm talking about Beckstoffer To-Kalon, Georges III, and Sugarloaf, three prime Napa Valley Cabernet sites that typically demand $100+ per bottle.
You could put this in a blind tasting against $100+ Napa Cabs, and I guarantee you it would do well.
2021 Recoltant Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley -- Here's why your should buy it:
- Julien Fayard is one of the Valley's most gifted winemakers. This is the guy who trained at Lafite Rothschild and Smith Haut Laffite, who makes 99-100 pointers at Le Pich and Purlieu, and the same fella who use to be Melka's winemaking director. To be able to get a "Fayard-made" wine into your glass at this price point is downright amazing!
- Mr. Fayard is tapping into his network of farmers and growers, and he's buying A+++ grapes from some of the Valley's top vineyards. The 2021 is 100% varietal, and it offers up immediate gratification, but it's going to get more complex with 5 to 10 years of age.
- This certainly smells like a $75+ bottle of wine. Deeply colored, it explodes out of the glass with aromas of lush dark cherry, blackberry, black currant, dark chocolate, violet, and Asian spice.
- Rich, silky, and elegant on the palate, this offers up the type of texture you normally have to pay big bucks to get. The tannins are silky, the acidity is mild, and for those that enjoy Cabs with ripe opulence, you're going to love this one!
