Eulogio “Locho” Pomares is the 7th generation of his family to make wine at Bodegas Zarate, one of the region’s top Albarino producers and a producer I love as well. Fento is his little “side hustle,” focused on Albarino from the warmer, drier Condado do Tea subzone of Rias Baixas. The result is a wine with more weight and ripeness, while still maintaining plenty of freshness, brisk acidity, and minerality.
Pomares makes this with minimal intervention, hand-harvesting the grapes, fermenting with native yeasts in stainless steel, and aging the wine on its lees for 6 months. Bursting with white peach, nectarine, tangerine, honeysuckle, and rocky minerality, this is a sensational summer white. I have no doubt it would fare very well in a blind tasting against pricier Albarinos, including Pomares’ own Zarate.
