El Casetero Garnacha

A Ton of Wine for the Money: 2020 El Casetero Garnacha

There are a ton of value-priced Spanish Garnachas out there, but I believe the version from El Casetero takes home the "Best in Show" award.

Crafted by Spanish Master of Wine Fernando Mora, this comes from old, dry farmed, head-trained Garnacha vines in the Campo de Borja. For lovers of clean, purely fruited, and highly expressive reds, this is your new house red.

I have to be honest, I was not expecting much when my sales rep pulled this out of his bag.  It looked like just another Spanish Garnacha, and that playing field is packed these days. A sniff and a sip later, and I was honestly jumping with joy. Here is a wine that shows the fresher and more elegant, almost Pinot Noir-like side of Garnacha.

You could taste hundreds of sub-$15 reds from anywhere in the world, and I think you'd have a hard time beating this one. Fernando Mora is one of Spain's young rising stars, and both Master of Wine and writer Jancis Robinson, and the Wine Advocate's Luis Gutierrez have written at length about him and his wines in a very positive fashion. I'm doing the same!

100% old-vine, organic and dry-farmed, and hand-harvested Garnacha fermented and aged in cement vats, this is a wine of medium weight, lovely texture, and sheer drinkability. The flavors are of ripe cherry, strawberry, raspberry, and a hint of white pepper. Juicy and fine-grained, this glides across the palate with effortless ease and a pleasure-bent personality.

If you want to experience the fresher and more suave side of Grenache/Garnacha, you need to get some of this wine in your glass. I highly suggest you take advantage of the volume/deal price because I guarantee you're gonna' love this wine and odds are, it will sell out.
