I've been a longtime fan of the wines of Bodegas Muga, one of the benchmark estates of Rioja. We sold a ton of the last vintage of their El Anden Crianza, and it was splendid. As good as that wine was, the 2023 is even better.
To my palate, this is the best vintage of El Anden I've tasted. It comes remarkably close to Muga's more expensive Reserva Rioja. There's a silkiness and effortless flow to this wine that I absolutely love, along with a slightly darker fruit profile and a level of complexity you just don't expect from a Crianza. It honestly drinks like a wine that costs considerably more.

The quality of this wine should come as no surprise. It's Muga! This is one of Rioja's top estates, and everything they make is great. The Wine Advocate loved the 2023, calling it "quite serious" with "supple and focused flavors and very fine tannins." Warm dark cherry and plum meld with blood orange, damp earth, cracked pepper, and thyme in this blend of 70% Tempranillo and 30% Garnacha. Everything about it is satisfying!
If you've ever wondered why Muga enjoys such a stellar reputation, this is a wonderful introduction to their house style. Enjoy it with anything off the grill or just pour a glass and sip slowly. It gets better with air.
