La Mesma was founded in 2001 by three sisters, Paola, Francesca, and Anna Rosina, who decided to trade their city careers for a life among the vines in Gavi. Their mother had long thought it was crazy to have a house in Monterotondo without a vineyard, and the sisters eventually took her advice. What started with just a few hectares has grown into a 25-hectare organic estate devoted entirely to Cortese, with vineyards in Monterotondo and Tassarolo.
In a relatively short span, I think La Mesma has established itself as one of the top estates in Gavi, and their Yellow Label is a great example of why. The wine comes from the limestone soils of Monterotondo, and the vines average 30 years of age. These older, lower-yielding vines and well-drained soils give this wine its oomph and layered personality.
I'm a big fan, as it offers more body and a more interesting set of aromas and flavors than most Gavis do. Drink this with all sorts of dishes. From poultry and pork to seafood and vegetarian cuisine, the natural acidity of Cortese pairs wonderfully with whatever you're having.
