Now in its 16th vintage, the Bedrock Vineyard Heritage Red is one of the very best red wines to come out of the brilliant 2024 vintage. I've been lucky enough to have tasted every vintage released, and this is one for the ages.
Rated 98 points by Jeb Dunnuck and 95 points by the Wine Advocate, this ancient-vine Zinfandel blend is close to perfection. It is a potent red wine that takes some time to come into shape, but once it "arrives," it delivers detailed notes of black fruits, bittersweet chocolate, complex Asian spices, orange zest, and rocky minerality.
Morgan Twain-Peterson founded Bedrock in 2007, and he was destined to make great Zinfandel. Morgan's father was Joel Peterson, founder of Ravenswood and one of the early champions of the variety. The apple didn't fall far from the tree, and Morgan is today considered one of California's most passionate, intelligent, and talented vignerons.
It shows in this wine, which is his pride and joy. Morgan makes several other Heritage Reds from ancient sites throughout the state, but this one comes from his own certified-organic Sonoma Valley vineyard, which dates back to the 1850s. These old, dry-farmed vines give tiny yields of thick-skinned, intensely flavored berries, and in 2024, this wine really shines.
It is a powerful, singular Zinfandel, and what sets it apart from other Zins is its structure. It is ripe and inviting, but there's balancing tannin and acidity to keep everything grounded. And that lovely fruit matches up beautifully with the more savory and complex notes of smoky herbs, toasted spices, and iron-like minerality. Just a lovely wine to enjoy now with a long decant and over the next 10-15 years.
98 points, one of the best Sonoma reds of the 2024 vintage, and made by a guy who's been around vineyards since he was a baby.
