2021 Pingus PSI Ribera del Duero

96 Point Temranillo from Pingus: 2021 PSI Ribera del Duero

What a wonderfully pure and soulful Tempranillo from Peter Sisseck, one of the great vignerons of Ribera del Duero and the world. His 2021 Pingus PSI not only garnered a 96-point rating from Vinous Media, it was also #7 on their Top 100 Wines of 2024.

I hate to build up all of that excitement, especially when I only have 48 bottles to sell, but that is the truth of the matter. We did clean our distributor out, but this one is going to move fast, I guarantee it.

“This is an incomparable value in the world of Spanish wine from an uncompromising producer. An absolute must-have.” - Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous Media.

Peter Sisseck is on a mission to produce a wine that captures the soul of Ribera del Duero, and with his PSI, he has accomplished that. He and his business partner Pablo Rubio work with and purchase fruit from hundreds of growers committed to preserving their ancient, head-pruned Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo) vineyards.

I find it to be a very interesting and admirable model that I wish more producers and negociants would follow. Sisseck and Rubio not only pay higher prices for better fruit, they also assist these growers in working their vineyards organically and biodynamically.....not because it's cool, but because it produces healthier and better grapes.

Vinous Media loved the '21 PSI, and they are my most trusted publication. "The 2021 PSI is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha sourced from old vines planted in calcareous soils and was aged for up to 16 months in mostly sizeable French oak barrels. In the glass, it's garnet-red with a light purple sheen. The nose offers blood notes along with sour cherry and blackberry, intertwined with violets and dried flowers, resulting in a layered, complex profile. On the palate, it's dry and velvety. Chalky tannins define a compact mouthfeel and long-lasting fruit and floral flavors. The 2021 is a distinctive Ribera del Duero with excellent nuance and agility."

The Pingus story is a great one. Danish winemaker and Bordeaux-trained Peter Sisseck decided to give it a go in the rough-and-tumble Ribera del Duero in the early 1990’s. In 1995, his debut vintage of Pingus was released. How was it? Good enough for famed wine critic Robert Parker to call it “one of the greatest and most exciting wines I have ever tasted.” No, Pingus PSI is not that wine, but you'd have to dish out close to $1,000 to get a bottle of that. I say save your money, buy this, and you'll immediately know that it's the good stuff.

I am so excited to be the lone retailer in Asheville selling this wine. It’s truly special, and it’s a wine to enjoy with only the best of friends. To fully appreciate it, I recommend a good, hour-long decant and/or a meal of grilled lamb and roasted root vegetables.
