95 Point-Rated Zin Blend, Less than $20: Marietta Cellars Old Vine Red Lot #73

95 Point-Rated Zin Blend, Less than $20: Marietta Cellars Old Vine Red Lot #73

Not only did the Marietta Old Vine Red Lot #73 score 95 points with Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, it also comes to you at an incredible price. All I can say is BACK UP THE TRUCK! We bought enough to fill a swimming pool, but I guarantee you those will be gone in no time.

For over 40 years, the Bilbro family have been making this delicious, ripe, and spicy, Zinfandel-based blend. The current bottling of their OVR Red is the best I've ever tasted from them, and at less than 15 bucks, this stuff is going to be gone in no time.

Let's start with that Wine Advocate review, as it will give you a perfect sense of what's in the bottle. "The NV OVR Lot 73 is composed mainly of Zinfandel with smaller portions of Syrah, Petite Sirah, Carignan and Barbera. Medium ruby, it offers intense red cherry, blood orange and apricot perfume with accents of rooibos tea leaves, red licorice, saline, lilac and loads of spicy nuances. The medium-bodied palate is light on its feet with soft tannins, bursts of refreshing acidity and detailed amaro accents on the long finish. This is so easy to drink!"

For over 40 years, this has been one of the great red wine values coming out of California. An old-school field blend produced from old vines from Marietta's certified organic vineyards in Sonoma and Mendocino Counties, this is not just one of the great domestic red wine values, it's one of the best red wine values in the world. It's impossible to find anything negative to say about this wine, so I'm not going to. It's perfect for all sorts of occasions, from everyday sipping to meals involving grilled foods.

Founded in 1979 by Chris Bilbro and inspired by his Aunt Marietta’s good home cooking, hard work, and honesty, Marietta Cellars continues to be a family run affair. These days, Chris’s son Scott runs the operation with same passion as his father. Since taking over for his father, Scott converted all of the family's vineyards to organics, and the wines are better than ever.

For many years, all of the grapes for Marietta’s Old Vine Red were purchased from various grape growers, but today the family owns over 400 acres scattered throughout Sonoma and Mendocino Counties. With such vast acreage under their watch, the Bilbros are able to select the best fruit each year to maintain consistency and quality in this wine.

So what do I think about it? Reviews from others are great, but I know many of you value my opinion, so I'll provide it. This pours a deep and dark color, and the bouquet is really impressive and one that I rarely encounter with wines in this price range. Brambly, spicy red and dark berries lead the charge, followed by more complex notes of flowers, anise, and white pepper. The palate is equally pleasing, with a medium-bodied personality and soft and supple tannins. I concur with the Wine Advocate's opine that this is so easy to drink.

Like I said before, this is a wine that drinks just fine without food, but do yourself a favor and try it with your favorite barbecue — chicken, pork, or beef. You’ll thank me!
