Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvee 2019

93 Point-Rated Cab Blend: 2019 Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvee

From one of the oldest estates in Sonoma County comes one of the greatest Cab-driven values of all time. Yep, the 2019 Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvee is one for the ages folks. Rated 93 points by Jeb Dunnuck and coming to you at less than $20, it is amazing how much "bang for buck" this Bordeaux-inspired blend offers up.

I have always had a fondness for the wines of Gundlach Bundschu, a sixth generation, family-run estate located in the heart of Sonoma County. Their wines are real, they're accessible in terms of taste and price, and their 2019 Mountain Cuvee is just lights out delicious. I acted fast when this became available from my distributor, and we snatched up their last 14 cases.

Mr. Dunnuck summed this up better than I could, and I 100% agree with his glowing review of Gun Bun's 2019 Mountain Cuvee. "Based on Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the ruby/purple-hued 2019 Red Wine Sonoma County gives up a juicy, lively style reminiscent of Bordeaux with its red and black currants, tobacco leaf, and cedar aromas and flavors. With beautiful fruit, medium-bodied richness, and silky tannins, it's an undeniably delicious red to enjoy over the coming decade or more."

With over 320 acres of estate vineyards, the Bundschu family have plenty of fruit to choose from to craft this wine each year. Furthermore, these vineyards are primely located at the crossroads of the Sonoma Valley, Carneros, and Napa Valley AVAs, at the base of the Mayacamas Mountain Range. In the hot and dry 2019 vintage, these cooler sites yielded a beautiful and polished wine that is packed with North Coast personality.

The blend here is 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with the balance in Syrah, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Aged for 10 months in French oak (20% new), this really turned out wonderfully in the highly regarded 2019 vintage. Plush, fine-grained, and medium to full-bodied, this offers up immediate notes of ripe dark berries, mocha, spice box, and high-grade cigar tobacco.

A wine that could easily go toe-to-toe with wines costing two to three times the price, I can promise you this will not last long. Pick up a six-pack, enjoy some now with steaks or lamb chops, and lay some down for 5-10 years......to enjoy with steak or lamb chops. You're gonna' love it!
