There's a new extreme value red in the shop, it's certified organic, and it's 100% DEE-LISH. The 2019 Sierra Norte Pasion de Monastrell is fresh, ripe, and toasty, and it's the perfect red wine to have on hand for whatever and whenever.
Monastrell, aka Mourvedre, is to Southern Spain what Malbec is to Mendoza. The grapes actually have a fair amount in common. They both yield rather full-bodied, darkly-fruited wines, and they both tend to have gentle and pleasant tannins. That is certainly the case with the Pasion de Monastrell, a wine that provides a ton of enjoyment at a wonderful price.

This is an excellent find in estate-bottled, certified organic, high-quality Spanish red wine. Located in Valencia, in Southeastern Spain, Bodega Sierra Norte manages over 300 hectares of organic vineyards. Monastrell is one of the estate's specialties, and their Pasion de Monastrell is crafted from old, un-grafted, 50-60-year-old vines.
These old vines are harvested and carefully sorted by hand, very rare for a wine in this price range. These low-yielding vines give us a wine with great depth, concentration, and even a bit of complexity, also a rarity for wines in this price range. Fermented in tank and aged in second-fill French oak barrels for 6 months, the finished wine is scrumptious.
Deep ruby in color, this is boldly aromatic with notes of ripe raspberry, cherry jam, blueberry, spice, and toasty oak. With air and time, more complex notes of paprika, cracked pepper, and herbal nuances emerge. On the palate, this is gently tannic with plenty of full and generous berry fruit nuances, finishing long and spicy.
A perfect red for spring and summer cookouts or casual sipping, it is a seriously stellar value. Cheers and keep drinking the good stuff in the AVL!
