Marina Marcarino is one of the trailblazers of Italy's Piemonte region. She led Punset, her family's winery towards organic and biodynamic certification, and she gets a lot of much deserved praise for her beautiful Barbarescos, but I think we need to talk about how freaking great her white wine is.
Marina's 2024 Langhe Bianco is our pick for the top white wine of the summer! A blend of 70% Arneis and 30% Nascetta (more on both of those below), I'm going to warn you, it is dangerously drinkable. Super fresh, highly aromatic, dry, and zesty, it's exactly what you want to be drinking on these steamy-hot days.
Branch out, try something other than Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, or Chardonnay. You will be glad you did!
2024 Punset Langhe Bianco -- Why Should You Buy It?
- This tastes just as good as it smells! Pretty aromas of peach, green melon, jasmine, elderflower, citrus zest, and mineral lead into a bright, fresh, and mineral-driven palate that will have you coming back for sip after sip.
- Arneis and Nascetta are two of the Piemonte's most noble native white varieties. Both are hard to cultivate for a number of reasons, but for producers that stick with them, the grapes yield elegant and aromatic whites unlike any other.
- Punset crafts their wines with minimal intervention, and this is a wonderful example of natural wine. Organic and biodynamic farming, hand-harvesting, native yeasts, minimal sulfur additions, and all the good stuff : )
- Marina Marcarini does not craft her wines in this way to be hip, she does it because she believes that taking these more laborious and risky steps yields better wines that express terroir.
I think she's onto something, and I adore this white wine. At less than $20, it's a stupid-good deal in artisan, hand-crafted white wine from a highly-respected producer. Tasty without food, I think it would also pair wonderfully with sushi, summer veggies or salads, or creamy cheeses.
