If you hadn't noticed, we love the wines from Marietta Cellars! We've currently got 4 different wines from them on sale -- new to their roster is the Old Vine Ranch Sauvignon Blanc. For a winery known especially for their big, bold, and hearty reds, I am thoroughly impressed with this new white.
"There's a good bit of textural depth and overall structure to complement the wine's expressive varietal aromas and flavors." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media.
Stylistically, it is "very California" with its riper tropical and stone fruit notes, and I think it is very worthy of the 91 points that Mr. Galloni bestowed upon it. Scott Bilbro, head honcho at Marietta, continues to amaze me with the quality-to-price-and-points ratio in all of his wines, and I'm even more impressed that all of the grapes come from organic farms. Bravo Scott!
There is not a better domestic Sauvignon Blanc value out there, trust your wine guy on that.
2024 Marietta Old Vine Ranch Sauvignon Blanc -- Why Should You Buy It?
- Ripe and textured, this offers up attractive notes of peach, Meyer lemon, tropical fruits, citrus zest, and green herbs. As Galloni said, and I agree with him, "this fleshes out beautifully with a bit of air."
- Despite its riper style, there is still a wonderful vein of acidity running throughout the wine, from start to finish. 3 months of aging in neutral oak rounds the acid out a bit, but this is still totally fresh.
- How does it compare to New Zealand or Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc? It's kind of right in the middle, but with a bit more ripeness from that California sunshine.
All in all, it's just a very easy-to-love sort of white wine. Not too acidic but not overripe and fat, it is refreshing and finishes long and satisfying. A nice glass of this with a pasta primavera with summer veggies would be sublime!
