Francis Blanchet makes five different Pouilly-Fumes, and they're all fantastic! I got to taste them all in one "experience" recently, and it was tough choosing a favorite, but that's what you all pay me to do : ) For the 2024 vintage, two bottlings really stood out to me.
We featured their brilliant Vieilles Vignes Pouilly-Fumé about a month ago, and you all loved it so much that there's only a couple of cases left. Good news, Blanchet's Calcite Pouilly-Fume is equally exceptional this vintage.
Planted on the same soils as those found in Chablis (more on that below), this mineralic masterpiece is high-toned and energetic Sauvignon Blanc in peak form. If you love Loire Valley Sauvignon Blancs, you need some of this in your glass tonight!
2024 Domaine Francis Blanchet Pouilly-Fumé 'Calcite'
Why should you buy it?
- This is Sauvignon Blanc by way of Chablis! Calcite refers to calcium carbonate, a mineral compound commonly found in the limestone-rich, Kimmeridgian soils that stretch from Pouilly-Fume to Chablis.
- Mineral Lovers Unite! If you love your whites to smell of crushed rock, chalk, sea salt, and crushed sea shells, this wine will make you very happy.
- If you love Sancerre, you need to jump on the "Pouilly-Fume Bus." Located just east of Sancerre, Pouilly-Fume isn't quite as popular currently, so you can still find versions from top-notch producers (like this one) at reasonable prices.
- The aromas and flavors showcase the essence of the place and the variety. Bright, zesty, fresh, and intense, this exhibits notes of sea air, oyster shells, quince, nectarine, and citrus rind.
This is perfect for sipping on hot days at the beach and/or served alongside fruits de mer, French for seafood, especially shellfish. If you have the opportunity to enjoy a glass of this with some oysters on the half shell, do it!
