The monks of this order not only follow a strict and pious lifestyle, they also make some of the best white wines in Italy's highly-acclaimed and high-altitude Alto Adige region. The abbey enjoys a stellar reputation for their wines, and Italy’s highly-respected Gambero Rosso named the abbey’s enologist as their Winemaker of the Year.

Novacella's Pinot Grigio is sublime, and that is no doubt due to the combination of site and intention. The abbey's Pinot Grigio vines are planted at 600-750 meters in elevation, and the south-facing position of these vineyards means they get maximum sunshine. These ripe grapes are fermented with native yeasts in a mixture of stainless steel (75%) and large, neutral French oak casks (25%).
That oak aging is what gives this wine its luxurious texture, and this all happens without the oak influencing the flavor of the wine....because it's neutral oak. Medium to full-bodied and showing gorgeous aromas and flavors of white peach, nectarine, blood orange, lime peel, and ground ginger, it's my pick for the best Pinot Grigio produced in Italy.
This is such a cut above 99% of other Italian Pinot Grigios, and it would absolutely rock with the traditional holiday meal.
