Gavi is the white wine jewel of the Southern Piemonte, and it is the showcase for Italy's noble Cortese grape.
I love the bone-dry, crisp, flinty, and floral character of the Gavalussa Gavi, and it smells of white flowers, lemons, green apples, melon, and crushed rocks.
There is a real sense of terroir flowing throughout this clean and vibrant white wine, and this brilliantly exhibits the calcium-rich, sand, and clay soils that Gavi is known for. Take a look below to see what I'm talking about.
I often recommend Gavi to customers looking to expand their palates outside the realms of Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and un-oaked Chardonnay. Most folks thank me, and I think that is because Gavis like this one are so much more interesting and complex than those aforementioned varieties, but the cost remains incredibly reasonable.
Due to its close proximity to Liguria, Gavi's winemaking and gastronomic traditions are more Ligurian than Piemontese. That means you should enjoy this light and lovely white wine with seafood, pesto, and other clean and veggie-driven dishes, but no food is required. This makes for a great aperitif too.
Seriously folks, this is such a righteous white wine for the money, and it's so much more exciting than similarly priced Pinot Grigios, Chards, and Sauv Blancs. Take the journey, you won't regret it!
