Le Grage de Piaugier Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2020

2020 La Grange de Piaugier Cotes du Rhone Blanc

The 2020 Le Grange de Piaugier Cotes du Rhone Blanc is one of the most stunningly aromatic white wines I’ve smelled and tasted this year.

Many of you are familiar with the wines of Domaine de Piaugier, as we have done very well with their Cotes du Rhone Rouge as well. This white literally smells like a peach orchard surrounded by wildflowers. One sniff and one sip, and I bought every bottle my distributor had.

I think it’s hard to argue the fact that Domaine de Piaugier makes some of the top values in the Southern Rhone. Based in the village of Sablet, just north of Gigondas, the Autran family farm their 30 hectares of vines with care and consideration for the earth. Their wines are honest, they honor the regions from they come, and they are delicious.

Their Cotes du Rhone Blanc is brand new to the store, and it is a field blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Viognier fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel. Though unoaked, this beautifully balanced White Rhone is complex and full-bodied yet harmonious and fresh. There’s really something for everyone here.

The intense aromatics of this wine immediately grabbed my attention, and despite the wines overt aromas and flavors of spring flowers and peach, there is wonderful underlying acidity. And despite it’s 14.5% ABV, it is wonderfully balanced on the palate, with no alcoholic heat on the finish.

I’ve got to be honest, it reminds me of a bottle of Condrieu I recently enjoyed. The only difference is the Condrieu retailed for $65. Importer Charles Neal recommends serving it with mushroom risotto. I can get behind that, but I think I’ll be enjoying a bottle in the very near future with the butter chicken from Cinnamon Kitchen.
