The 2019 Slam Dunk Red Blend is a “side hustle” wine made by the fine folks at Royal Prince, one of California hottest new producers. The blend here is 55% Petite Sirah and 45% Zinfandel, all from old vines scattered throughout the state.
This rich and ripe red will appeal to those who have enjoyed the J. Dusi Model M and the Field Recordings Fiction.

I know, goofy name, but trust me, what’s in the bottle is pretty serious juice. Crafted by the team at Royal Prince Wines, I’m going to assume that most of the grapes come from Napa and Sonoma sites. They’re probably working with old vines and pedigreed growers and producers, but their website doesn’t list much technical data.
Whatever the case, I tasted this one recently, and what’s in the bottle is quite good. Boasting a dense purple color, this one offers up decadent notes of ripe blackberry, spiced plum, mocha, and cracked black pepper. The palate is packed with sumptuous flavors of dark berry preserves, brown spices, and hints of smoky sage and thyme. With ripe tannin and an overall soft and round profile, this will drink well with or without food.
A couple of top critics recently chimed in on this one. Jeb Dunnuck said it “has loads of red and blue fruits, flowery incense, and spice aromas and flavors” and described it as being “a no-brainer purchase.” The Wine Advocate had similar remarks. “Full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of generous black fruit preserves, framed by a plush texture and seamless freshness, finishing long and spicy.” Needless to say, this is a definite crowd pleaser, and the price is hard to beat.
Our distributor had run out, but they just got more in, and I bought enough to fill a small swimming pool. A great “house red” for those who prefer their wines fuller and chewier, this has become a Table Wine best seller. Cheers to happy drinking and eating in Asheville!
