2019 Quinta de Santa Teresa Avesso

2019 Quinta de Santa Teresa Avesso

I hope you enjoy the 2019 Quinta de Santa Teresa Avesso as much as I do. Produced with 100% Avesso, native to Northern Portugal’s Minho region, this is a grape that many are calling the “next star grape” of Portugal. After tasting it recently, I’m inclined to agree.

The Avesso grape is intriguing because it produces weighty wines that maintain a fresh character. This version, from certified organic producer Quinta de Santa Tersea, grabbed me by the palate immediately. With characteristics of Chenin Blanc, White Cotes du Rhone, and even top-tier Muscadet, this captivating white is new to the store, new to me, and it can be new to you. I highly recommend it!

It was love at first smell and taste for me on this one. When my Rise Over Run rep Chris Thornbury poured this one for me, I knew I was going to buy it. Gorgeous scents of ripe citrus, peach, and green herbs wafted from the glass. Equally outstanding, the palate delivered a plump and generous mouthfeel with pulsing acidity and complex mineral notes on the finish. I immediately ordered every bottle Chris had in stock.

Bold move there Josh, nobody is knocking down the door for unknown Portuguese wines. Wrong! Our clientele is adventurous and once folks get this chilled and into their glass, they’re going to be back for more.

The small and relatively new Quinta de Santa Teresa was established in 1991 on the border of Vinho Verde and the Douro Valley. I can say with certainty  this family-run estate is going to be around for many years to come. I would also say that over the next decade, Portuguese wines will become more widely accepted and love in the US. Wines like this will pave the way.

Can you say seafood wine? This would work wonderfully with a seafood salad, calamari, or pretty much anything that comes out of the water. It’s also the quintessential “porch pounder.” Get some. You won’t regret it!
