2019 Pennautier Chardonnay

2019 Pennautier Chardonnay

I know everyone is looking for great values these days, and the 2019 Pennautier Chardonnay is delicious and downright cheap! From a family-owned estate with vineyards near Limoux in Southern France, this is kind of like a Macon-Villages with a little more ripeness and body. Many of our long-time customers have also compared it to the Novellum Chardonnay…actually, many folks like it better!

A perfect autumn white, this is no-oak Chardonnay at its best. Great for all sorts of occasions and meals, it’s a ton of wine for the money. And when my distributor put it on sale earlier this week, I bought a bunch. Keep reading if interested.

I know there’s a lot of mass-produced plonk produced in the Languedoc. But I want to emphasize that this is not that! Far from it. This is estate-grown, sustainably farmed, family owned and all of that jazz. Most importantly, it’s delicious! A perfect “house white” or casual “party wine,” it honestly drinks like a wine that would normally run $15 to $20.

The key to quality here is the unique terroir, and trust me, I rarely talk terroir with under-$15 wines. But there’s “stuff” to talk about here. First and foremost, the vineyards are in Limoux, a cooler and more elevated zone of the Languedoc. When you combine that with the stony, calcareous, limestone soils that cause the vines to struggle and the wines to express more depth of flavor, you’ve got yourself a winning formula.

The Pennautier Chardonnay is fermented and aged in stainless steel with zero oak treatment. And it is all the better for using little or no oak. This is both ripe and bright with a nice mix of pear, apple, pineapple, lemon zest, and flinty mineral on the finish. Fleshy and medium to full bodied on the palate, the stainless steel fermentation preserves the wine’s natural acidity, keeping things fresh and vivacious. If you told me this was from Burgundy, I would not think otherwise.

So there you go, a delicious Chardonnay that won’t even come close to breaking the bank.
