SOLD OUT! The second I smelled the 2019 Eugene Carrel Jongieux Rose, I knew I was gonna’ by a bunch of it! It reminded myself and my staff of the Lafage Rose, but it’s 5 bucks cheaper. If you love dry rose, DO NOT MISS this one.
A blend of 80% Gamay and 20% Mondeuse (native to Savoie), this one flows beautifully with zesty red fruits, balanced acidity and Alpine minerality. Trust me when I tell you this stuff is going to fly out of the store at a rapid pace. And it did! We were sold out of this one, but it’s back and we’ve got 20 cases to offer at the deal price.
2019 Domaine Eugene Carrel Jongieux Rose
“Reminds us of the Lafage Rose but costs $5 less!” Team Table Wine
SOLD OUT
The wines of Savoie deserve a lot more attention and at Table Wine, this is going to be the wine that makes that happen. Located about 40 miles southwest of Geneva, Domaine Eugene Carrel et Fils is located in the village of Jongieux. Established in the 14th century, these guys have been around for a year or two. And the estate is managed by Eugene, his son Olivier and his son-in-law Sebastien.
The key to this wines success is the placement and situation of the family’s vineyards. Situated at nearly 1,500 feet and planted on steep, southwest facing slopes on limestone and clay soils, Jongieux enjoys 2-3 more hours of sun than any other area in Savoie. Consequently, the fruit reaches full ripeness and chapitalization (adding sugar) isn’t needed – the resulting wines are ripe, yet balanced and fresh.
A blend of 80% Gamay and 20% Mondeuse, like I said in the introduction, the nose of this wine is enthralling. Gorgeous aromas of strawberry, raspberry, cherry, and white flowers explode out of the glass. And the palate is equally compelling. Bright, zesty, crisp and laced with red fruits, honeysuckle, and mellow mineral notes, this is a ton of dry rose for the money.
Summer is here, hot and sunny days are on the way, and this is my pick for the dry rose find of 2020. Drink it with your friends, drink it with seafood, drink it while you’re sunbathing. Whatever, just drink it!
