The 2019 Cederberg Chenin Blanc is a great introduction to South African Chenin, and it’s just a great overall white wine.
Fermented completely dry and possessing a zesty and crisp personality, this is a great example of Chenin Blanc from some of the highest elevation vineyards in all of South Africa.

If you’re not drinking South African Chenin Blanc yet, you are truly missing out. This grape which is originally from the Loire Valley is very adaptable to different climates and soils, and South Africa plants more Chenin Blanc than any other country in the world. The fine folks at Cederberg make one of my personal favorites.
This pristine wine farm sits at 3,200 feet in elevation, making it South Africa’s highest altitude vineyard. And with altitude comes cooler, drier conditions and more diverse, rocky soils. This all comes through in the finished wine, which possesses wonderful acidity and complex mineral notes along with ripe and zesty fruit.
Fermented in stainless steel and aged on its lees for 5 months, this offers up gorgeous layers of melon, grapefruit, and fleshy white pear. Creamy and zippy on the palate, this is a wine that drinks well with or without food. I’m thinking a creamy seafood pasta or a spicy green curry would really make this one shine.
Totally your call on the pairing, but please do yourself a favor and try this one. I’ve sold this to Pinot Grigio, no-oak Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc lovers, and all have responded positively. Cheers and keep drinking the good stuff in the AVL!
