Azelia Langhe Nebbiolo 2019

2019 Azelia Nebbiolo Langhe

The 2019 Azelia Nebbiolo Langhe is a wine that smells and tastes like Barolo, but the tannin and acid are much softer. How does this happen you ask? Easy, all of the grapes come from younger vines in Castiglione Falletto & Serralunga d’Alba, two of Barolos most prized terroirs.

When you combine that with the fact that Azelia produces some of the most sought after wines in the Piemonte, you have the makings of not only a great wine, but a great value too. That’s right, we’re offering this one up at less than $25 per bottle!

The family of Luigi, Lorella, and Lorenzo Scavino run this fifth generation winery, one of the finest in the Piemonte. In a good year, they produce 80,000 BOTTLES (about 6,700 cases), and that production is spread across 9 or 10 wines. Their wines “fell from grace” a bit in years past, no doubt due to their choice to experiment with newer oak barrels, but their current releases are all about purity and sense of place.

Just in case you are new to the Nebbiolo game, it is one of the greatest and oldest grapes on the planet. Nebbiolo is responsible for the legendary wines of Barolo and Barbaresco, and the grape is noted for its stunning aromatics, its powerful structure, and its “fussy” disposition. The grape flowers early, ripens late, and prefers to be grown on hillsides with clay and silt soils. Needless to say, Nebbiolo doesn’t make it easy for those that choose to grow it, but when it’s done right, it produces stunning wines.

Produced with 100% Nebbiolo from 20+ year old, organically farmed vineyards, Luigi and Lorenzo ferment this wine entirely in stainless steel. The reason for this is to preserve purity of varietal but also to avoid adding additional wood tannin. Boasting a gorgeous ruby color, this one exhibits classic aromas of bright cherry, raspberry, mint, violet, and rose petal. Lithe and highly energetic on the palate, this one tastes of bright red fruits, flowers, and mineral.

Lynn and I enjoyed a bottle of this with my homemade Bolognese recently, and it was absolute perfection. I don’t think I’ll eat Bolognese without a bottle of Nebbiolo ever again. I suggest you do the same, and if you’d like my recipe, just ask.
