Attems Pinot Grigio 2019

2019 Attems Pinot Grigio

The 2019 Attems Pinot Grigio is one of the best value Italian Pinot Grigios I’ve ever tasted. Hailing from Friuli, in Northeastern Italy, it’s fuller, richer, and more complex. At less than $15 per bottle, it’s a great pick to serve with the roast chicken, salmon, or seafood.

We featured this estate’s Sancerre-like Sauvignon Blanc recently and sold out of it quickly. I suspect we’ll do the same with this one, as it reminds me of a fuller flavored and bodied Alsatian or Oregon Pinot Gris.

Like the Attems Sauvignon Blanc, their Pinot Grigio punches way above its weight class. I am rarely enthusiastic about Pinot Grigio. So much of it is bland and boring, but this stands in stark contrast. The bouquet is highly aromatic, the flavors are fully present, and the finish is long and satisfying. When you taste it, you’ll see what I mean.

Attems is one of Friuli’s most historic producers, with a winemaking heritage dating back nearly a millennium. Count Douglas Attems, who led his family’s estate for the second half of the 20th Century, was one of the leading forces in helping Friuli attain its DOC status. In 2000, he sold the estate to Marchese Vittorio Frescobaldi, and the quality of the estate’s wines rose even higher.

Sandy rocky soils, warm days, and cool nights are the key features of Attems’ estate vineyards. The well-drained, mineral-rich soils of Friuli result in wines with concentrated, full flavors. Optimum ripening conditions are a direct result of the warm and sunny days and cool nights; when you combine this with hand harvesting and sorting and a state of the art winery, it should come as no surprise that a great bottle of wine is produced.

So what’s it taste like? Like I said before, in a blind tasting, I’d guess high quality Alsatian or Oregon Pinot Gris. It’s packed with with notes of white peach, pear, apple, and white flowers. Medium to full bodied and fleshy, it remains fresh and zesty with food friendly acidity. James Suckling loved this one too: “A Pinot Grigio with sliced-pear, flint and green-melon aromas that follow through to a medium to full body, pretty fruit and a flavorful finish.” And though I sometimes find his scores to be inflated, I think he nailed it on this one.

I’d highly recommend you get at least a 6-pack of this, especially if Pinot Grigio is your favorite. Enjoy it with friends, with foods, and be sure to tell everyone where you got it. Cheers folks!
