2019 Arnaud Lambert Saumur Blanc 'Clos de Midi'

If you want to experience the joys of Loire Valley Chenin Blanc, you’ve got to try the 2019 Arnaud Lambert Saumur Blanc ‘Clos de Midi.’ This single vineyard, certified organic, dry white recently rated 93 points with Wine Spectator, and it’s seriously delicious.

From the famed hill of Brézé, the Clos de Midi vineyard sits on the upper, cooler section of the hill. Possessing a perfect balance of fruit and mineral, this is one that must be tasted to be believed.

This ancient estate has been around since at least the 15th century. Previously known as Château de Brézé, this was the wine of choice for royalty, and the hill of Brézé has long been regarded as one of the Loire’s top spots for Chenin Blanc. The estate was purchased in 2009, and that is when father and son Yves and Arnaud Lambert took over. They put all of their energy into the estate, and in a matter of just 10 years, they’ve established this estate as one of the best in the region.

Their Clos de Midi is 100% Chenin Blanc from rocky, chalky, limestone-rich soils. If the vineyards of the Loire were classified like those in Burgundy, this would definitely be Grand Cru material. And when you combine the uniqueness of this site with the super high quality of the 2019 vintage, you have the makings of a wonderful wine.

In terms of tasting notes, Wine Spectator got it right. “This offers an expressive mix of yellow apple, persimmon and Meyer lemon flavors infused with light notes of hazelnut and hints of smoke. The acidity is electric, giving this plenty of verve and carrying all the elements to the long and seductive, lightly floral finish. Best from 2022 through 2034.” If that doesn’t sound good to you, you might just not like white wine.

In all seriousness, this is “Grand Cru Chenin” at a ridiculously low price. When you consider top Vouvrays and Savennieres are fetching $50+, I think you’ll quickly realize this is a ton of wine for the money. Get some, pick up some creamy goat cheese and a baguette, and call it a night. Cheers to happy drinking and eating in Asheville!
