Is Argiolas Vermentino 2018

2019 Argiolas 'Is Argiolas' Vermentino

Argiolas makes some of the best Vermentino in the world, and their ‘Is Argiolas’ is the top white wine produced at the estate. Produced with grapes from Argiolas’ oldest, later harvested vines, this is full-bodied, ripe, exotic, and luscious.

The past three vintages of this one have all scored 93-95 points, and I have no doubt the 2019 vintage will snag another 90+ point score. Actually, it already has! Yours truly rates it 94 points. Yep, this is about as good as Vermentino can get, and we bought every bottle our distributor had in stock. Come and get it!

The 2018 and 2017 both took home 95 point scores. If you tried and loved those as much as I did, make sure to get some of this. There’s tremendous concentration and intensity of flavor, but there’s also bright acidity. And the wine tastes just as good as it smells. Crazy notes of white peach, apricot, tropical fruits, white flowers, almond, and honey are all at play in this world-class white.

And wine writer James Suckling, who can sometimes be a bit generous with his scores, nailed it on this one. “Here’s a very serious white indeed, trading in pronounced but bright apricots, peaches, mangoes, cloves, nutmeg and white pepper. Wonderful density and vitality to the full-bodied palate, where vibrant acidity crafts out a fine shape through fleshy tropical fruit. Long on the finish. Excellent value.”

If you know anything about Sardinian wine, you know that Argiolas is one of the best producers on the island. Founded in 1938 by Antonio Argiolas, the estate is still family owned and operated. From the beginning, they’ve chosen quality over quantity, and they’ve dedicated themselves to producing archetypal wines from native varietals.

And this is year in and year out one of their best efforts. Fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness, the wine is aged for 6 to 8 months on the lees to add complexity and richness. And this richness calls for richer flavors on the table. Try it with seafood risotto, roasted and carmelized autumn root vegetables, or stash some for the classic Thanksgiving meal.

This is one of those wines that will appeal to a wide range of white wine lovers. Unfortunately, supply is limited, and I guarantee you it will sell out faster than you think. And once it’s out, we’ll be waiting for the next vintage to be released.
