2018 Presqu'ile Chardonnay

2018 Presqu'ile Chardonnay

SOLD OUT! The 2018 Presqu’ile Chardonnay from Santa Barbara County is my “Perfect California Chardonnay.” It showcases ripe and zesty fruit, but there’s zero new oak, zero butter, and zero vanilla. Tasting a lot like a Macon with riper fruit and broader texture, this is a marvelous bottle of white wine to enjoy this fall.

Presqu’iles goal is to produce Santa Barbara Chardonnays that show “exceptional finesse and sense of place.” The Chardonnay is harvested from a selection of Dijon clone vines that are sourced from some of the Central Coast’s top Chardonnay sites. We’re talking Bien Nacido and Solomon Hills, two of the unofficial Grand Crus of Santa Barbara County.

“Presqu’ile’s 2018 Chardonnay (Santa Barbara County) offers notable freshness and verve. Citrus peel, white flowers and bright saline notes are beautifully delineated. Airy and gracious, with terrific nuance, the Santa Barbara County shows how compelling 2018 is.” That’s what Antonio Galloni had to say about this one. Sounds kinda’ French doesn’t it? It tastes kinda’ French too, but there’s a little more of ripe fruit and a little less minerality than a White Burgundy. Nevertheless, this is a wine that will appeal to Old and New World Chardonnay drinkers.

Presqu’ile is an admirable operation. The Murphy family started from scratch. In 2007, after an extensive search that spanned the West Coast of the United States, the Murphy family acquired an ideal unplanted 200-acre property in the hills of the Santa Maria Valley. Today, they are considered one of the leading new lights of the region. They farm sustainably, they ferment with native yeasts, they use only neutral oak for this wine, and the resulting wines are pure, polished, and delicious. This is New World Chardonnay at its finest.

I had this one the other night with pan seared and roasted salmon and it absolutely rocked the house. Of course I had a glass while I was cooking too…..duh! This is great with or without food. Get some!
