If you know me, you know Red Burgundy is a passion of mine, and the 2018 Jean-Marc Pillot Bourgogne Rouge Les Grandes Terres is a wine that really grabbed my attention. From a single vineyard located just south of Chassagne, this is a product of the warm, dry, and sunny 2018 vintage.
Possessing serious depth of flavor and a ripe, seamless personality, this is both interesting and effortless to drink. Even better, it comes from a 4th generation, organic, family-run estate. Just 7 cases up for grabs. This will go fast!

Pillot definitely gets more press for their whites, but after tasting this recently, I think their reds deserve more attention. And this is certainly their top red wine value. The estate’s Grandes Terres lieu-dit (single vineyard) is just south of the higher rent district of Chassagne-Montrachet, and the Pinot Noir vines here are 65-70 years old.
It was these old vines that were the key to success in the very hot 2018 vintage because with their deeper-rooted vine networks, they had access to the underlying water tables. The inherent intensity of these old vines combined with the “heatwave” conditions of the 2018 vintage resulted in ripe, plush, and pleasure-bent Pinot Noirs.
This is abundantly apparent when you pop and pour this beauty. The color is deeper than what you typically get in a Bourgogne Rouge, the nose is full of ripe wild berries and spices, and the palate is seamlessly integrated. Yep, this one is drinking beautifully right out of the gate.
In addition to thanking Jean-Marc Pillot and his family for making such a lovely agricultural product, I’d also like to thank importer Neal Rosenthal for making this available in the United States. If you love Red Burgundy as much as Neal and I do, be sure to pick up as much of this one as you can afford. You will not regret it!
