When supplier Bill Bowman got word that Mark Herold would no longer be making his Collide or Flux red blends, he took matters into his own hands. He reached out to one of his all-star estates in Paso Robles and asked if they could make him a similarly styled red. They said yes, and that winemaker is….drum roll please….Cris Cherry of Villa Creek and Cherry House wines. Look them up. This is one of Paso Robles’ hottest estates and winemakers!
Thee 2018 Colossus is a blend of 40% Graciano, 30% Carignan, 15% Grenache, and 15% Syrah. Fermented in cement and stainless steel, the wine sees 12 months of aging in French oak. Despite the wine’s blend of Spanish and French grapes, this is ripe and pleasure-bent all the way. The bouquet is ripe and forward with notes of cassis and blackberry followed by more complex nuances of baking spices, vanilla, smoked meat, and roasted herbs. The palate is full-bodied, ripe, and pure with a soft texture, fine tannin, and a long, satisfying finish.
This would be great with steak, lamb, or other hearty winter fare, but it goes down super easy without food too. Buy some, share it with friends, and let them know where you got it.
