Somebody stop me! I can’t stop buying 2018 Red Burgundies! When you taste the 2018 Gachot-Monot Cotes de Nuits Villages Rouge, you’ll understand why. This hot and sunny year has yielded some of the most forward and ripe Pinot Noirs of the 21st century.
Despite all of the ripe fruit, there’s still tremendous nuance and complexity in the wines of the top growers and producers. And Damien Gachot is quickly rising the ranks. Importer Kermit Lynch calls young Damien’s wines “some of the best values in the KLWM portfolio.” I concur!
2018 Gachot-Monot Cotes de Nuits Villages Rouge
“Drinks like Nuits-Saint-Georges at half the price. Delicious now, but this should hold up for 10 to 15 years.” – 94 points – Josh Spurling

Damien Gachot is a fifth-generation vigneron. Along with his Danish wife Lise, he farms twelve hectares in the village of Corgoloin, in between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Beaune. Despite the fact the pair work with lesser known sites throughout the Cotes de Nuits, they work their vines as if they were premier crus. This means old vines, low yields, organic farming, native yeast fermentations, and minimal fining, filtering, and sulfite additions. You can taste this passion and commitment to quality in every sip of this wine.
Gachot-Monot’s wines were first brought to Kermit Lynch’s attention by none other than Aubert de Villaine, the longtime technical director at Romanée-Conti, and Bertrand Chevillon, one of the leading producers in Nuits-Saint Georges. If you know your Red Burgundies, you know a bottle of Chevillon is going to set you back 100 bucks and a bottle of Romanée-Conti might require a second mortgage. That is why this stellar wine is a great value and one that any Red Burgundy or Pinot Noir fanatic will immediately fall in love with.
Ok, enough blathering on Josh. What’s this stuff taste like? 100% Pinot Noir from vines that average 45-50 years of age, this one is fermented in cement tanks and aged in French oak (20% new) for 12 months. It pours a gorgeous, deep ruby color, and the nose is packed with notes of dark berry fruit, exotic spices, smoked meat, wet tobacco, and damp earth. Moving on to the palate, this is full-bodied, silky, and round, with a long and satisfying finish. Although drinking beautifully now, this can be enjoyed through 2030.
Finding excellent Red Burgundy for less than $50 is becoming harder and harder, but it’s not impossible. Stock up on this one to enjoy with a lavish holiday meal. I’m thinking duck would be great with this one, but turkey, roast chicken, or pork would work well too. We snagged our distributor’s last ten cases of this one. Get some before it’s gone!
