For those who love a good bottle of Brunello but hate paying $50+, the 2018 Caparzo Rosso di Montalcino will do the trick. Rated 93 points by Ian d’Agata of Vinous Media, one of the top Italian tasters in the world, he went on to call it “one of the very best of the 2018 vintage.”
Out-classing nearly all of the Rosso di Montalcinos in this highly-rated vintage, this is one of the great values of the 2018 Tuscan vintage. There are just 14 cases available — once those are gone, that’s it for the vintage. Keep reading if interested.

Caparzo has knocked it out of the park with their 2018 Rosso di Montalcino. In a lot of ways it smells and tastes like Brunello, but the softer tannin/acid structure of the wine makes it totally drinkable…..like tonight! Composed entirely of younger Sangiovese Grosso vines that will eventually make it into Caparzo’s Brunello, this is definitely worthy of the ‘Baby Brunello’ title.
My advice is to buy as much of this one as you can, just like I did. This is the essence of Sangiovese Grosso from an estate whose wines are still way under the radar. Even after Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini of Altesino purchased Caparzo, they remained under the radar. And after several great Tuscan vintages and great reviews, Caparzo still doesn’t get the respect they deserve. What I’m trying to say is buy their wines now before their prices go way up. It’s gonna’ happen.
Ian d’Agata of Vinous Media nailed this review and his commentary is nearly identical to mine. “Exceptionally perfumed nose reminds of red fruits, menthol, coffee and fresh herbs. Dense and fresh with flavors closely echoing the aromas. Boasts outstanding acid-fruit-tannin balance and a silky-sweet mouthfeel; I tasted two different bottles just to be sure, and based at least on what I tasted, this Rosso is a real knockout, in fact one of the very best from the 2018 vintage.”
Drink this classic and traditional Tuscan red now and over the next 8 years. Enjoy with leg of lamb, standing rib roast, or pasta with a creamy mushroom sauce. Or keep it simple with a nice spread of salami, cheese, bread and accompaniments.
