Bila-Haut is the Roussillon outpost of Rhone legend Michel Chapoutier, and the 2018 Bila Haut Cotes du Roussillon Villages Rouge deserves mention as one of the great wine values in the world.
A blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan from certified biodynamic/organic vineyards, this pure, rich, and spicy red is an absolute joy to drink.

When famed Rhone oenologist Michel Chapoutier bought a property in the wilds of the deep Southern Roussillon in 1999, I knew this was going to be an estate to watch. Some 20 years later, Bila-Haut is one of the reference point estates of the region. The combination of biodynamic farming, lots of sunshine, and low yields result in a wine with deep and intense flavors.
Joe Czerwinski of Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate very accurately described this wine as one that is “just flat-out fun to drink.” I couldn’t agree more. Like Chapoutier’s other wines, this one is all about balance and purity. The combination of ripe fruit, earth, spice, and supple tannin makes this one both an easy drinker and an interesting glass of wine.
Jeb Dunnuck, with one of the best palates for Southern French wines out there, loved this one too. “A wine that always seems to deliver, the 2018 Côtes Du Roussillon Villages Les Vignes De Bila Haut offers up a great nose of ripe red and black fruits as well as classic Roussillon garrigue, spice, leather, and dried flower aromas and flavors. With beautiful fruit, light, silky tannins, and just loads of upfront charm, this is beautiful red is worthy of a multiple bottle purchase.”
Drink this dazzling value with just about anything off the grill, but keep in mind this is also an ideal “cocktail red.” If you tend to like reds from Southern France, I encourage you to pick up 6 bottles of this one.
