I’ve been looking for new whites in anticipation of the changing of the seasons, and the 2018 Bila-Haut Cotes du Roussillon Villages Blanc is a perfect spring white.
We are currently featuring three wines from Domaine Bila-Haut, the Roussillon estate of Michel Chapoutier. These are all wines of tremendous purity and balance, and the white is a fresh and aromatic blend based primarily on Grenache Blanc.

The white wines of Southern France are a mixed bag. When they’re bad, they’re fat, alcoholic, and clumsy wines with little to no appeal. When they’re good, like this one, they combine intense floral and spice notes with zesty citrus and tropical fruits. Plus, they rank among the best “sunny day sippers” out there.
With spring, just around the corner, this fresh and vivacious blend of Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris, Vermentino, Marsanne, and Macabeo is the wine you want to have on hand for porch and patio consumption. From Chapoutier’s certified biodynamic vineyards in Latour de France, right on the Spanish border, this is a wine that will appeal to lovers of rich yet fresh and textured whites like Pinot Gris, Viognier, or Albarino.
Simply put, this smells straight up like a sunny, slightly breezy, warm spring day. Scents of white flowers, peach, lemon, and honey waft from the glass. Follow that up with a fresh, racy, and flavorful palate, and you have yourself a very attractive white wine. As Jeb Dunnuck said, this is “going to shine on the dinner table” with shrimp scampi, crab cakes, or other sunny day fare.
I bought my distributor’s last 9 cases of this one, and it’s first come first served. If you like bright, fresh, and aromatic whites, go ahead and sign up for 6 bottles. You’ll be glad you did.
