SOLD OUT! The 2017 Strauss Gamlitzberg Sauvignon Blanc is one of Austria’s finest versions of this classic grape. And it’s not just me that thinks so — Wine Enthusiast agreed and awarded the new vintage with a 92 point score. Oh yeah, they’ve awarded the past three vintages 92 points!
Tasting like a hypothetical blend of high-class Sancerre meets top-flight, California Sauvignon Blanc, it offers the best of both worlds. I’ve got ten 6-packs in stock, and this one is going to fly out of here.
2017 Strauss Gamlitzberg Sauvignon Blanc
92 points – Wine Enthusiast
SOLD OUT
Here’s what Wine Enthusiast had to say. “A touch of creaminess lends fluidity and ease to the nose of this wine. It also accentuates the sunny stone fruit notes that pervade the dry, concentrated but light palate. Varietal expression is true but subtle here; it promises to be even better with some bottle age. Drink now–2025.” Offering up a lovely mix of orchard and citrus fruits (think peach meets grapefruit), along with subtle notes of green herbs and elderflower, there’s a lot going on here. The palate brings out the peach, but also a zestiness reminiscent of grapefruit peel, making for a crisp texture. Full of flavor, this has a rounded mid-palate despite the slender body, making it a great white for the cooler fall weather.
The Strauss family have run this family domaine since 1810 located in Steinbach, near the town of Gamlitz, in the heart of the southern Styrian wine route. These days, brothers Gustav and Karl Strauss run the show. Gamlitzberg is the largest contiguous wine-growing area in southern Styria, in the southeastern part of Austria. The region enjoys optimal climatic conditions, with perfect south/south-eastern oriented slopes, which get maximum sunshine. Combine that with the Strauss’s 40+ year old Sauvignon Blanc vines, and you get a ripe and intense wine of exquisite quality.
So there you go, another great find from your friendly wine monger. If you love Sauvignon Blanc, whether it be from New Zealand or from France, you owe it to yourself to try this one.
