Portugal is home to some of the world’s greatest wine values, and the Palestra Douro Tinto is one that will blow you away.
This lightly oaked, full-bodied, and luscious blend of Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Franca, and Tinta Barroca will appeal to many who like softer, rounder Cabs and Red Blends.

If you’ve been shopping at Table Wine since we opened in 2010, you might remember this wine. It was one of my first “finds,” and it was a bottle I recommended often. Actually, almost everyone who took it home came back for more. Sadly, the distributor dropped it from their portfolio in 2014, and I thought it would be gone forever. Much to my surprise and delight, it re-entered the market earlier this year, and the new vintage is just as good as the original.
Portugal’s Douro Valley is one of the most extreme and beautiful growing zones in the world. And yes, this is where the grapes are grown to produce Port, but it’s a little known fact that the steep vineyards of the region produce just as much “table wine” (non-fortified wine). These steep, warm sites yield wines with truly full and plush flavors.
Palestra is a great introduction to Douro Valley red wine. Fermented in stainless steel and then aged in French oak for 8 months, the resulting wine is dark in color and rich in flavor. Boasting enticing notes of spiced plum, blueberry, raspberry, and spicy, toasty oak. Open-knit, full of flavor, and a little too easy to drink, this offers shockingly good quality to price ratio.
This makes a perfect house or cocktail red, but it’s also great with all sorts of foods. But my favorite pairing with this one is some good old BBQ, takeout of course, from your favorite local restaurant. Try it. You’ll thank me!
