2017 Capitain Gagnerot Bourgogne Rouge

2017 Capitain Gagnerot Bourgogne Rouge

The 2017 Capitain Gagnerot Bourgogne Rouge is one of the greatest Red Burgundy values on the planet. From a single vineyard at the base of the famed hill of Corton, this is both a great introduction to Red Burgundy, but will also appeal to Burgundy veterans and fanatics.

This is the Red Burg I go back to time and time again. There’s just something super satisfying about this medium-bodied, silky, and sensual Pinot Noir. And even better, it comes from a 9th generation, certified biodynamic and organic, family-run estate.

Allen Meadows of Burghound summed up Capitain Gagnerot’s house style very well with 8 words. “The Capitain style is one of understated purity.” And this guy is my favorite writer/reviewer when it comes to Burgundy. For those who want to experience why Pinot Noir from Burgundy is so special, this is the bottle to buy. It’s just such a pretty and easy to drink red wine while also possessing some “serious” traits as well.

What makes it so special? Several things, but let’s start with the age of the vines. This single vineyard wine comes from a site that was planted in 1952. And these old vines yield a wonderful variety of flavors and aromas. Then let’s add in the fact that Capitain Gagnerot is now certified biodynamic and organic. But they didn’t get these certifications for marketing purposes. They did so because healthy vines yield better tasting wines, and the family eventually wants to pass their vineyards on to the next generation. And the last factor to this wine’s greatness is the quality of the 2017 vintage. A warm, dry, and sunny year yielded beautiful Pinot Noirs with ripe fruit and great expression of terroir.

So what’s it taste and smell like? In my opinion, Heaven. Every time I open a bottle of this one, the aroma that wafts out of the glass puts a huge smile on my face. It smells of ripe cherries and raspberries, but then there’s a wonderful note of brown spices, autumn forest floor, black tea, and mineral. On the palate, the wine is concentrated with flavor, but light to medium in body and seamless in texture. The finish is long. It’s a wonderful example of a wine that is relatively light, but full of flavor.

If you love Red Burgundy, do yourself a favor and pick up a six-pack and save big. If you’ve never had Red Burgundy, but are interested in seeing what all the hype is about, try a bottle and see what you think. And if you enjoy pairing your wine with food, this one is incredible with roasted salmon and root vegetables. It’s also great with brie, pate, and a baguette. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
