2016 Triacca Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Santavenere

2016 Triacca Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Santavenere

The Triacca Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Santavenere represents the top value version of this wine I’ve ever tasted.

From a top-notch Tuscan vintage, this one scored 92 points, and it comes to you at less than $30. It’s hard enough to find good Vino Nobile for less than $40, but discovering one for less than $30 is unheard of…..until now!

In case you hadn’t heard, 2016 was nearly perfect in Tuscany. Wine Spectator rated the overall vintage at 97 points, saying the year produced “vibrant, elegant wines” that were “harvested under ideal conditions.” The warm and sunny conditions that were present during the 2016 growing season yielded ripe and aromatic Sangiovese-based wines. When you stick your nose in the glass of this one, you’ll know what I mean.

Casa Vinicola Triacca is an admirable producer with vineyard holdings in a number of regions. They own estate vineyards in Chianti, Montalcino, Valtellina, and Montepulciano. I like their other wines, but their Vino Nobile really did it for me. Possessing wonderfully pure and prototype Sangiovese aromas and flavors, this one will light up your senses with notes of dusty dark cherry, mint, violet, assorted spices, and sage.

Full-bodied and packed with flavor, there is certainly tannin here, but it’s relatively soft and supple. James Suckling described this one perfectly. “This Vino Nobile shows intensity and richness with ripe-cherry, chocolate and walnut aromas and flavors. It’s full-bodied with layers of ripe fruit and tannins. Lots going on for the appellation. Drink now.”

I agree with his “drink now” sentiment, but I also think this has the stuffing to keep drinking well over the next 5 to years. Enjoy it with lamb chops, beef stew, or other hearty winter fare. Cheers to happy drinking and eating in Asheville!
