SOLD OUT! Let’s start with Jeb Dunnuck’s review on the 2016 Domaine du Grand Montmirail Gigondas Vieilles Vignes, as it’s glowing. “The finest wine ever from this estate is the 2016 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes, which is 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre that was destemmed and brought up in 30% new barrels. (The Grenache was brought up all in concrete.) It’s an incredibly gorgeous, full-bodied, powerful yet elegant Gigondas that has rocking notes of plums, black raspberries, kirsch, spice, and new saddle leather literally soaring from the glass. With ultra-fine tannins, a silky, seamless texture, no hard edges, and a great, great finish, it’s a wine to buy by the case.” I’ll agree with that buy by the case quote.

Seriously, where else are you going to find 95-point-rated, “finest wine ever from this estate,” Gigondas for less than $30? You’re not going to. In 2016, all of the forces of nature came together to create ideal conditions in the Southern Rhone. Warm and sunny conditions prevailed, creating the best vintage I’ve met in my 20 year wine career. Yes, I like the ’16’s even more than the ’07’s and the ’10’s……….by a hair of course. It’s a vintage to invest in, as wines like this are glorious now, but they’re going to reward the patient.
And I’ve long been a fan of this estate’s wines — I think we’ve carried every vintage back to 2010, and every year has been rock-solid. But the 2016 is in a league of its own. The Grenache comes from 65+ year old vines, while the Syrah and Mourvedre are from 30 year old vines. The old vines combined with the estate’s decision to de-stem and use a bit of new oak add to the pleasure factor of this wine. Like Jeb says, this is silky, seamless and smooth, yet full bodied and powerful. Bravo Grand Montmirail!
And bravo Josh for spotting this one early and snagging as much as my distributor would let me have! I worked a great deal on this one to be able to offer it to you at one of the best prices in the country. Don’t think too long on this one — it’s gonna’ go fast. Cheers to happy drinking and eating in the AVL!
