The 2016 Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Monfalletto is straight up stunning. Rated 95 points by both Vinous Media and Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, this is one of the most cost-effective ways to get world-class Nebbiolo in your glass.
The 2016 Piedmont wines are seriously impressive. Antonio Galloni summed it up best, “For many growers, the 2016’s are not just epic, they are career-defining wines.” Need I say more? No, but you know I’m gonna!

I’m going to get right into those reviews. Antonio Galloni described this one as “a gorgeous wine that shows just how fabulous the year is.” He went on to say that the “elegance and refinement of La Morra come through loud and clear” and that “the 2016 will drink well right out of the gate.” Not to be outdone, the Wine Advocate voiced similar sentiments. “This is a fabulous set of new releases, starting with this classic (entry-level) Barolo that is linear, direct and beautifully focused. The fruit is soft, elegant and open-knit in nature, with berry nuances, oak spice and crushed limestone.” Sounds good right?
Trust me, it’s great! And it should come as no surprise as Cordero di Montezemolo is one of the oldest and most respected estates in the region. Since 1340, the same family has managed this estate in the town of La Morra, the heart of the appellation. Since 2013, the family has farmed all of its vineyards using organic practices. No herbicides, no pesticides, and no fungicides are used. Today all of their properties are certified organic. Healthy vines equal tasty wines!
The estate’s Monfalletto bottling includes fruit from a variety of sites scattered throughout La Morra. This is their “entry-level” Barolo, but believe me when I say this is quite advanced. Medium-bodied and more about complex aromatics and style than power and weight, this is a great introduction to Barolo. Beware though! Once you head down this path, it’s hard to come back. Nebbiolo, like Pinot Noir, is a grape that seduces and charms.
Drink this majestic wine during the holiday season with grand meals. Think standing rib roast, ossobuco, lamb chops, you get the point. But be sure to tuck some back for future nirvana. Yep, this will keep, evolve, and improve for 10 to 15 years.
