Caparsa Chianti Classico Riserva Caparsino 2016

2016 Caparsa Chianti Classico Riserva 'Caparsino'

Caparsa is the Chianti producer everyone's talking about. The 2016 Caparsa Chianti Classico Riserva 'Caparsino' is one that will thrill lovers of old school, traditional, soulful Tuscan reds.

Antonio Galloni, one of the best palates in the game, had some pretty strong remarks about Caparsa's latest releases. "I was quite frankly blown away by the wines I tasted from Caparsa this year. Proprietor Paolo Cianferoni and his family craft deep, soulful wines loaded with character."

Let me start with Galloni's glowing review, as he absolutely loved this wine! "Aromatic, silky and also plush, the 2016 is fabulous. Mint, pine, lavender, espresso and macerated dark cherry all open up in the glass, but more than anything else, the 2016 is a wine that gracefully marries power with richness. The 2016 is a total knock-out. Don't miss it. Drink 2020 - 2036."

Yep, this was one of Mr. Galloni's higest rated Tuscan reds of the wonderful 2016 vintage. Not only is this one of finest bottles of Sangiovese out there, it is also one of the finest values. I know $40+ isn't cheap, but when you look at the other 2016 Tuscan reds that Vinous Media rated 96+ points, you will quickly see that almost all of them cost $100+. Unfortunately, it's only a matter of time before Caparsa's wines go up in price,

The reasoning for that is simple -- Paolo Cianferoni and his family make tiny amounts of wine. We're talking 20,000 bottles of wine in a good year, and they make 5 to 6 different wines! The estate is also certified organic, their Sangiovese vines are old (planted in the 1960's), and supply is not meeting demand. Remember, that's 20,000 bottles of the entire world, not just the US.

So there you go, truly artisanal Chianti from one of the top producers in the region. A big word of advice on this one -- decant for 1-2 hours before enjoying. It's a big and structured wine, and oxygen is its friend. Alternatively, this should age incredibly well. Drink now through 2035 with rich and hearty dishes. Think steak Florentine, Bolognese, or wild boar ragu.
