I’m not gonna’ beat around the bush — the week is off to a rough start. But it’s about to get better! The 2016 Burgo Viejo Rioja Crianza is a 92 point-rated red that retails for less than $15/bottle. What a deal!
Offering up tons of satisfying flavors at a ridiculously low price, this one is in stock and it’s flying out of the store at a rapid pace.

Talk about a big glass of comfort and who can’t use that right now? Here’s a Tempranillo-based, traditional Rioja with a bit of age on it that’s drinking like a dream right now. And my regular price is crushing both Total Wine (they’re at $17.99) and wine.com (they’re at $18.99) on this one.
Trust me, this highly rated Spanish red is worth every penny of $19, but I love it when “little old Table Wine” can beat the “big guys” on pricing. And this is one of those wines that’s going to appeal to lots of wine lovers. Why you ask? Because it offers unparalleled complexity and nuance for the price.
But don’t trust me, your friendly wine monger. Here’s some choice commentary from some of the top tasters in the world. Suckling said it had a “dense palate of dark berries and chocolate” and that it was “full and reserved.” And Tim Atkin, Master of Wine with Decanter, said it was “well priced and very appealing.” And last, but not least, Vinous Media summed it up best: “Smoky-accented cherry, blackcurrant and coconut aromas are sharpened by a suggestion of cracked pepper that adds spicy lift. Plush and broad in the mouth, offering sweet dark fruit liqueur and oak spice flavors that slowly tighten up on the back half. Finishes creamy and appealingly sweet.”
Sounds good right? Trust me, it is! I’ve been working in wine for 20+ years, but I’m embarrassed to say I’d never heard of Burgo Viejo until I tasted this one. Big thanks to Drew Summers, one of my most trusted reps, for bringing this wine to my attention. From a 35 year-old estate winery owned and operated by sixteen families, all working together, this is Rioja done right.
Lynn and I enjoyed a bottle of this one with grilled lamb chops and a low cooked mushroom stew the other night. Talk about a perfect pairing and you can do the same!
