The 2016 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino personifies the greatness of Sangiovese and the greatness of the 2016 Tuscan vintage.
In case you hadn’t heard, Vintage 2016 was perfect in Tuscany. Vinous Media called the vintage as “radiance personified.” And they went on the describe the wines as “dark yet radiant, expressive, nearly explosive at times, yet pure, poised and structured.” Yep, this is a vintage to invest in, and Altesino produced one of their finest wines of the 21st century.

If you’re looking for greatness in a bottle, look no further. Altesino stands tall as one of Montalcino’s most respected and historic producers. The winery’s “house style” is one marked by elegance and finesse combined with ripe and rich fruit.
Owned by Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini, who also owns Caparzo, this is an estate that is not resting on its laurels. Far from it, the estate continues to be one of the most innovative in all of Tuscany. When Elisabetta took over, the winery invested in modern winemaking equipment, and she hired two of top winemakers in Simone Giunti and Alessandro Ciacci. Since then, Altesino has regained its spot as one of the finest estates in Montalcino.
What I love about this wine is the incredible consistency from the nose to the palate. Gorgeous notes of cherry, raspberry, Mediterranean herbs, and eucalyptus give way to a fresh and ripe palate. Full-bodied and drinking well right now, this will only get better.
Trust me though, this will not be around for long. We only got a measly 5 cases for the vintage. When that’s gone, we’ll be waiting for the 2017 to be released.
