The 2015 Easton Zinfandel is one of the finest Amador County Zins out there. Rated 92 points by Wine Spectator and #45 on their Top 100 Wines of 2018, it was just released and I bought the lion’s share for the state.
And yes, you read the vintage correctly. Bill Easton, one of the pioneering producers of the Sierra Foothills, holds his wines back until he feels they are in prime drinking form. After sipping on a bottle of this one last night with some ribs and sides from Moe’s BBQ, I can assure you this one has benefited from the extra “bottle conditioning” and is drinking like a dream.

Is California Red Zinfandel the all-time best, spring and summer, grilling and chilling red? I say yes! And the 2015 Easton Zinfandel is the quintessential version. Boasting plenty of body balanced by zesty acidity, it offers up rich notes of blackberry, raspberry, spice, and smoky herbal notes. And it’s this combination of richness/brightness and fruit/savory spice and herb that makes this one of the top reds to serve with grilled meats, especially barbecue.
I’m a big fan of Sierra Foothill and Amador County Zins, and I think they often offer better QPR than Sonoma and Napa Zins. Amador County is much more inland than Napa or Sonoma, and it’s home to some of the oldest Zinfandel plantings in the state. Hot, sunny days turn to cool evenings, bringing breezes which blow down from the Sierra Nevada. This drop in temperatures allows the grapes time to close down their ripening processes overnight, retaining the acidity required to create balanced wines.
Bill Easton is one of the pioneers of Amador’s modern winemaking era. He founded his winery in 1984 and his wines always lead the pack in terms of quality. Being that he “set up shop” early, he was able to secure some of the region’s top high elevation sites, many of which climb to 3,200 feet. And it’s these cooler, rockier soiled sites that contribute to the complexity of his wines.
This is Easton’s highest-rated Amador Zinfandel ever. And trust me, Wine Spectator always like this one. And trust me even more when I tell you that you’ll like it too. Unfortunately, supplies are limited because that’s just the way it goes when you deal in wines from small producers. As I said earlier, fire up the grill and enjoy this one with baby back ribs, steaks, or chops.
