Are there any other local shops offering you pedigreed, pre-aged, masterfully made Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for less than $60? I don't think so, and the 2014 Convexity Cabernet Sauvignon is such an incredible deal.
Like many of you, I love more elegantly styled, refined, and complex Napa Cabs like Heitz, Mayacamas, and Montelena. Who doesn't, but those wines are going to set you back $100+, and they won't be ready to drink until at least 2030.
Do you want to spend that much and wait that long? I don't! Here are 3 key reasons why I think you should consider buying this.
Reason #1: Vintage 2014 was a great one for Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, with Wine Spectator rating the overall vintage at 95 points. With 12 years in bottle, this has entered a new zone, and I love where it's at.
My tasting notes: The dark currant and blackberry fruit is still vibrant, but the savory and secondary stuff has bloomed beautifully in the form of integrated notes of mint, cedar, dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and graphite. The tannin and acidity have mellowed but not disappeared, and the palate has terrific poise and balance. Drink this now and within the next 5 years.
Reason #2: The fruit sourcing is top notch. Most of the grapes came from the famous Red Hen Vineyard in the Oak Knoll District. This cool and gravelly sites also supplies fruit to all-stars like Ashes and Diamonds, La Pelle, and Matthiasson, but all of those Red Hen Cabs would run you $100+.
This heritage site is farmed with skill and attention-to-detail by Steve Matthiasson. That leads us to reason #3......
Reason #3: Maybe most importantly, the wine is made by Steve Matthiasson, who farms Red Hen and brought it back to prominence. I've hung out with Steve and his wife Jill, and they are about as friendly and laid-back as "Napa wine folks" get.
Steve is quite humble, but he's a very talented guy, both in the vineyards and the cellars. He has consulted at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Araujo, Spottswoode, Dalla Valle, David Arthur, and Chappellet, and he is one of the most respected vineyard managers and winemakers in the Valley.
What a novel idea. A wine made by the guy who also nurtured the vines and grapes to maturity, a characteristic found in all of the best wines in the world. When you add the nobility of this esteemed site along with the 12 years of cool and slow maturation, I think you'll agree this is worthy of your attention.
